Water treatment is essential for controlling scale, corrosion, and biological growth in open cooling tower systems. However, the chemicals used for water treatment should also be considered when selecting cooling tower fill material.

Why Chemical Compatibility Matters

Cooling tower fill remains in continuous contact with circulating water. Depending on the application, the water may contain oxidizing biocides, non-oxidizing biocides, pH-control chemicals, scale inhibitors, or other treatment chemicals.

The concentration, temperature, exposure time, and combination of chemicals can all influence how a plastic fill material performs over long-term operation.

Water Treatment and Fill Should Be Considered Together

A chemical treatment program should not be evaluated separately from the cooling tower components. Research on cooling tower biofilms has also shown that the material surface can influence the response of biofilm systems to biocide treatment.

This does not mean that one material is automatically suitable or unsuitable for every chemical program. Actual operating conditions should be reviewed before selecting the fill.

PVC, CPVC or PP?

PVC cooling tower fill is widely used for conventional cooling applications. Where higher temperature or more demanding chemical conditions are expected, CPVC or PP may be considered depending on the complete operating environment.

PP cooling tower fill is often considered for applications where higher chemical resistance or temperature capability is important. Material selection should always be confirmed against the actual water-treatment chemicals and operating conditions.

Do Not Select Fill by Material Name Alone

Before replacing cooling tower fill, it is useful to provide the water temperature, pH range, treatment chemicals, operating concentration, and any known chemical contamination.
