How High TDS Affects Cooling Tower Fill Performance

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is an important water-quality parameter in open cooling tower systems. As water circulates and evaporates, dissolved minerals become increasingly concentrated. If TDS is not properly controlled, deposits can develop on cooling tower components and affect heat transfer and water distribution.

Why High TDS Can Become a Problem

High TDS does not automatically mean that a cooling tower will perform poorly. The problem occurs when the concentration of specific dissolved minerals reaches a level where scaling, corrosion, or fouling becomes more likely.

Deposits can accumulate on the surface of cooling tower fill, reducing the effective contact area between air and water. Heavy deposits can also restrict passages through the fill and interfere with water distribution.

How TDS Affects Film Fill

Film fill depends on a large effective surface area and relatively open passages for air and water. When mineral deposits build up on the fill surface, the original flow characteristics can gradually change.

This may result in:

  • Reduced effective heat-transfer area
  • Restricted airflow passages
  • Uneven water distribution
  • Higher difficulty maintaining the required cold-water temperature

TDS Should Be Considered With Water Chemistry

TDS is only one indicator of cooling water quality. Conductivity, pH, hardness, alkalinity, silica, suspended solids, and the specific treatment program should also be considered when evaluating scaling potential.

Increasing cycles of concentration can reduce make-up water requirements, but it can also increase the risk of scale and corrosion if the water-treatment program is not properly controlled.

When Fill Material Becomes Important

If a cooling tower operates with aggressive water chemistry or frequent chemical treatment, the fill material should be selected according to the actual operating environment rather than based only on initial cost.

Our team can review the cooling water conditions together with the existing tower configuration and help recommend a suitable PVC, CPVC, or PP cooling tower fill for the application.
